How to Get a DEA License .
Obtaining a DEA license mandates that the provider be licensed as an ARNP and must hold a current active license to practice, whereby application forms for the DEA numbers may be obtained from the Pharmacy Board website @ https://pharmacy.iowa.gov/licensureregistration/controlled-substance-applications Links to an external site. , requiring that the ARNP register for a Controlled Substance Registration for prescriptive authority if prescribing controlled substances, up to schedule II (Iowa Board of Nursing, 2022).
Does Iowa Have a Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP)?
Iowa has what is called Iowa Prescription monitoring program (PMP), which provides authorized prescribers and pharmacists with information about their patients’ use of schedule II, III, and IV controlled substances, which is a useful tool in determining appropriate prescribing and treatment of patients without hesitation of aiding to a patient’s abusive or dependence of addictive drugs or diversion of such drugs to illicit use (Iowa Board of Nursing). The database of the PMP is essential and resourceful in that it contains controlled substance dispensing information of patients from Iowa pharmacies as of January 1, 2009 and maintains records for four years following the date of dispensing and are required to report dispensing information to the program at least weekly (Iowa Board of Nursing). It’s worth noting that authorized health care practitioners may, but are not required to access PMP information related to their patients’ use of controlled substances to aid in determining appropriate treatment options, but serves as additional healthcare tool in helping providers identify potential diversion, abuse and/or misuse of controlled substances by their patients, while fostering the most appropriate and effective medical use, and validating appropriate use of such additive substances, with requirement for a prior request for registration and program access by the practitioner, in order to be granted access to PMP information (Iowa Board of Nursing). The website to register for access to PMP information is https://pharmacy.iowa.gov/prescription-monitoring-program Links to an external site.
How Iowa describes a Nurse Practitioner’s Controlled-Substance Prescriptive Authority, and Nurse Practitioner Drug Schedules that Nurse Practitioners are Authorized to Prescribe.
In Iowa, it’s stated that “The ARNP shall have the authority to prescribe when engaged in the practice of a nursing specialty regulated under the rules adopted by the Board of Nursing” (Iowa Board of Nursing). The ARNP in Iowa can have prescriptive authority of controlled substances of schedule I AND schedule 11 (up to schedule II) (Iowa Board of Nursing, 2022).
Iowa regulation mandates current licensure as a Registered nurse for advanced nursing practice, in addition to having an advanced level certification by the national professional nursing certifying body recognized by the board, is required for licensure as an ARNP (Iowa Board of Nursing, 2022). Several barriers including lack of support, mentorship and respect, role ambiguity and workload could influence nurse practitioner independent practice, affecting work productivity and job satisfaction (Faraz, 2019). A new graduate for instance, who does not feel valued and supported by their organization or practice may find it more challenging to transition into their new role, and as a result, may feel overwhelmed with work, which would affect their productivity and patient outcomes. I was surprised to learn that health care practitioners are not required to access PMP information related to their patients’ use of controlled substances to aid in determining appropriate treatment plans. Although doing so for every patient may be time consuming, I would assume that mandating such requirement would aid in determining persons with potential habitual misuse of controlled substances, in hopes of minimizing/offsetting negative patient outcomes resulting from overuse/abuse.
Conclusion
To conclude, as a forthcoming ARNP, it’s important to know what to do to be licensed as an ARNP upon successful completion of studies and national examination, laws pertaining of scope of practice, and barriers that may exist that could hinder practice. Having such knowledge prepares the ARNP to engage in safe practice, and become proactive in overcoming those barriers, allowing one to engage in best practice to optimize positive patient outcomes.

How Texas State define the scope of practice of a nurse practitioner
In the state of Texas, the diagnosis and treatment of human responses to real or anticipated health concerns is what is considered to be within the scope of practice for a nurse practitioner. This includes conducting physical examinations, ordering, analyzing, and interpreting diagnostic tests, as well as writing prescriptions for drugs. A minimum of thirty hours of continuing education must be completed every two years by nurse practitioners in the state of Texas. In the state of Texas, nurse practitioners have the authority to diagnose and treat a comprehensive range of medical illnesses. They are able to order and interpret diagnostic tests, administer drugs, as well as give patients with education and counseling on a wide variety of health-related topics. In addition, nurse practitioners are allowed to carry out many of the same responsibilities as primary care physicians, including conducting physical examinations, placing orders for laboratory tests, and referring patients to specialists. It is possible for nurse practitioners in Texas to deliver a high level of care to their patients because the scope of practice for nurse practitioners in Texas is fairly extensive. However, there are some restrictions on the kinds of things that nurse practitioners can accomplish. To give one example, nurse practitioners are not allowed to conduct surgery or deliver some kinds of medical treatments, such as radiation therapy. The overall scope of practice for nurse practitioners in Texas is fairly expansive when seen from a broader perspective. Primary care physicians and nurse practitioners share many of the same responsibilities, but nurse practitioners are able to deliver a wider variety of services to their patients. Because of this, nurse practitioners are able to play an important part in the healthcare system in the state of Texas (Rounds, 2005).
What is included in Texas state practice agreement?
A Texas state practice agreement is a written agreement that outlines the APRN’s scope of practice. This agreement is made between a supervising physician and an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN). The agreement needs to be kept on record with the Board. Each time the two years have passed, the agreement needs to be renewed. The following are the components that make up an APRN’s scope of practice in the state of Texas. The independent management of health and illness, including the prescribing of prescription medications and controlled substances, as well as the performance of medical acts that fall within the scope of the nurse’s practice as outlined in the Texas Nursing Practice Act. These medical acts include, but are not limited to, performing physical examinations, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, making diagnoses, initiating and managing treatment plans, including the prescription of medications and other treatments, and making diagnoses. If the advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) intends to prescribe controlled substances or legend drugs, or if the APRN intends to perform any medical acts that fall outside the scope of the nurse’s practice as outlined in the Texas Nursing Practice Act, then the APRN is required to have a written collaborative agreement with a physician (Texas Board of Nursing, 2018).

If the DEA determines that you meet the requirements, they will provide you a DEA license. After that, you will be able to prescribe controlled medications with the use of your DEA license.
Does Texas State have a prescription monitoring program (PMP)?
The answer is yes; the state of Texas does have a PMP (prescription monitoring program) in place. This program monitors and keeps track of the distribution of restricted substances and prescribed medications throughout the state. The PMP also makes it possible for prescribers and pharmacists to exchange information with one another in order to facilitate the detection and prevention of drug addiction as well as the illegal distribution of prescription medications.
Although participation in the PMP is voluntary, all pharmacies and dispensing practitioners in the state of Texas are strongly encouraged to sign up. The PMP can be used by prescribers and dispensers to assist in the identification of patients who may be at risk for drug addiction or diversion, as well as to ensure that patients are receiving the care and treatment that is necessary for them.
How Texas State describe a nurse practitioner’s controlled-substance prescriptive authority, and what nurse practitioner drug schedules are nurse practitioners authorized to prescribe?
A registered nurse (RN) who has completed additional education and training in a nursing specialty is qualified to work as a nurse practitioner (NP).In each of the 50 states, nurse practitioners are able to obtain licenses that allow them to practice nursing and prescribe medications. In the state of Texas, nurse practitioners are qualified to write prescriptions for controlled substances and legend drugs that fall under Schedules II through V. Drugs classified as Schedule II have a high risk of abuse and can cause severe psychological or physical dependence if they are used even occasionally. Drugs that are placed on Schedule III have a lower potential for abuse compared to drugs that are placed on Schedule II.
However, these drugs still have the potential to cause moderate or low physical dependence as well as high psychological dependence. Drugs that are placed on Schedule IV have a lower potential for abuse compared to drugs that are placed on Schedule III, and they may only lead to a limited degree of physical or psychological dependence. Substances that are placed in Schedule V have the lowest potential for abuse and are likely to cause only a moderate degree of physical or psychological dependence in the user.
It is against the law for nurse practitioners to write prescriptions for drugs classified as Schedule I because these substances have a significant potential for abuse but no currently recognized medical use. Heroin, LSD, and marijuana are all examples of substances that fall under the Schedule I category
