Topic 3
One challenge experienced by the population health is the high prevalence of diabetes. The prevalence of diabetes is very high in El Paso, Texas. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the incidence and prevalence of diabetes have significantly risen within the last 10 years, where in 2017 about 2,323,220 individuals within Texas had diabetes. Texas is among the ten states that contribute to more than 50% of the national cost of diabetes (CDC, 2019).
This challenge would significantly benefit from all phases of translational research. T1, T2, and T3 would be useful in covering the research about the determinants of diabetes in El Paso, Texas to implement the appropriate interventions to prevent and reduce the rate of diabetes within this area.
However, T2, which is the second stage of translational research would benefit the research area most. T2 transfers the clinical findings from research to communities and practice settings to improve health (Han et al., 2018). Therefore, T2 would be used to transfer research findings from clinical trials and clinical studies about diabetes and the best interventions to prevent diabetes into the community setting (El Paso, Texas). T2 research has been shown to provide the knowledge necessary to improve the quality of life and health (Choi et al., 2018).
The likely challenge in using T2 is that the research can be very time-consuming. To address this challenge, it would be appropriate to team up with other healthcare providers in the organization especially researchers and nurse informatics. It would also be appropriate to collaborate with research institutions such as CDC to gather data about the population health challenge and the appropriate interventions to address the challenge.
