Medical and Terminology

The respiratory system is vital to life as it helps in the exchange of gases, to supply the body with oxygen, and to remove carbon dioxide. The key components are the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs. Air is inhaled through the nasal cavity, and here it is filtered, warmed, and humidified before traveling through the pharynx and the larynx to the trachea. The trachea further splits into the right and left bronchi, which further subdivide into smaller bronchioles in the lungs (Marchadier, 2025). These bronchioles end in tiny air sacs known as the alveoli, where the actual exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide occurs through the bloodstream. The diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscle located under the lungs. It is an essential part of the respiratory system as it contracts and relaxes to enable the lungs to breathe in and out.

The medical terminology of the respiratory system often contains suffixes, prefixes, and roots to describe structures and conditions. Examples include pulmo/pulmon/o, which means lungs, and pneum/o or pneumon/o, which means air or lung tissue. Some typical terms are dyspnea (difficulty breathing), apnea (absence of breathing), and bronchitis (inflammation of the bronchi) (Ernstmeyer & Christman, 2024). The suffix -itis denotes inflammation, and the suffix -ectomy denotes extraction, for example, lobectomy, the removal of a lobe of the lung. Knowledge of these terms assists healthcare providers in communicating and explaining respiratory diseases, diagnosis, and interventions effectively and accurately. The respiratory system plays a crucial role in keeping oxygen levels stable and contributing to the functioning of the body cells.
