Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (2022) and Roe v. Wade (1973) – A Bloated Bureaucracy and an Inclusive Supreme Court Discussion
In the case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (2022), the U.S. Supreme Court reversed the decision made in Roe v. Wade (1973), which had previously protected a woman’s right to an abortion. The Mississippi law at issue banned most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The Court ruled that the Constitution does not explicitly guarantee the right to an abortion, so individual states can now establish their own abortion laws (NPR, 2022).
I completely disagree with this ruling and find it disturbing that the Supreme Court of the United States has decided to take this stance in regard to abortion laws. I find this ruling to be concerning because it leads to abortion laws that differ significantly from state to state, making it harder for women to access abortion services. This is troubling, especially when one considers a pregnancy that may have developed due to less than desirable circumstances such as rape or incest. Additionally, overturning Roe v. Wade disrupts decades of legal protections and could set a precedent for further challenges to other rights based on evolving judicial views (Center for Reproductive Rights, 2022). Federal protection of abortion rights helps ensure consistent access and supports individual freedoms across the country Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (2022) and Roe v. Wade (1973) – A Bloated Bureaucracy and an Inclusive Supreme Court Discussion.

Discussion Response: Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (2022) and Roe v. Wade (1973) – A Bloated Bureaucracy and an Inclusive Supreme Court Discussion
Hello,
I like that your discussion post explores the issue of an inclusive Supreme Court, noting that the ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (2022) reversed the ruling in Roe v. Wade (1973). In addition, I like that you point out the key features of this ruling, noting that it calls into question a woman’s right to abortion while allowing individual states to enact abortion laws based on their interpretation of the Constitution. Besides that, I like that you identify the potential for significant differences in abortion laws across the USA, noting that it would make it harder for women to access abortion services. Furthermore, I like that you indicate that overturning Roe v. Wade (1973) disrupts the 50 years of legal protections that women enjoy, and sets a precedent for further challenges to other rights. While your discussion post is well presented, I feel that it can be improved. The ruling by the Supreme Court adds discriminatory obstacles to access to care for disadvantaged groups who experience a higher risk of limited access to healthcare than the general population. The Hyde Amendment of 1976 banned federal funding for abortion with the result that persons from disadvantaged groups could not use a federal funded insurance for abortion procedures. The ruling made in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (2022) implies that more obstacles are made in access to care as they not only have to pay for the abortion procedure, but they also have to travel to states where the procedure may be permitted to access the service. The ruling allows a ban and restrictions on abortion that impact the ability of women to access the full range of reproductive healthcare services (Kaufman et al., 2022; Manninen, 2023). Overall, your discussion post is well presented but can be improved by including the mentioned point Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (2022) and Roe v. Wade (1973) – A Bloated Bureaucracy and an Inclusive Supreme Court Discussion.
