Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing , 21(1), 79-85. Retrieved from https://chamberlainuniversity.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?”

Purpose of the Study

The study sought to validate efforts to detect distress among gynecologic cancer as an important measure for improving treatment outcomes with the results based on treatment outcomes and perceptions of health care professionals. It postulated that distress has negative implications for the care of these patients and that including routine screening in the care plan can identify distress early on and allow for the distress to be addresses thereby improving outcomes.

Research & Design

The study applied a mixed method approach that included elements of quantitative and qualitative research. The quantitative research elements were the information on distress levels and problems. The qualitative elements were the interviews conducted with health professionals. The mixed method approach supports the research purpose through ensuring that all persons directly involved in gynecologic cancer care provide information that informs the study.

Sample

The study sample comprised on geriatric cancer patients and health care professionals involved in their care. The sample is appropriate since it is intimately knowledgeable about the study topic. To be more precise, the patients can provide information on distress levels and problems faces while health care professionals can provide information on their experiences dealing with distress among such patients.

Data Collection

The study collected qualitative information from health care professionals. The information was collected using interviews in which the participants were asked to present their opinion on distress as a concern in gynecologic cancer care. Through the interviews, the study was able to identify the specific aspects of distress that are of concern, to include nervousness, worry, fears, fatigue, and sleep problems NR439: Evidence-Based Practice Week 6: Reading Research Literature Worksheet

Data Analysis

In this case, five problems associated with distress among gynecologic cancer patients and based on the interviews to include nervousness, worry, fears, fatigue, and sleep problems.

Limitations

The article does not identify the study limitations. However, the methodology could have presented a limitation. The interviews were conducted with health care professionals and not gynecologic cancer patients. Conducting interviews with the patients, in addition to the health care professions, would have provided more in-depth information to address the research purpose NR439: Evidence-Based Practice Week 6: Reading Research Literature Worksheet.

Findings/Discussion

The study reported that 66% of gynecologic cancer patients require referral or additional care for distress. This is an indication that screening for distress should be included as part of standard cancer care since more than half of the patients suffer from distress that could have negative care implications if left unaddressed.

Reading Research Literature

Reading the article is important since it provides evidence that supports changes to cancer care, specifically evidence showing that distress screening and care should be included as part of standard cancer care. In addition, the article show that research can provide evidence that supports practice changes NR439: Evidence-Based Practice Week 6: Reading Research Literature Worksheet
