Journaling provides a valuable tool for recording, reflecting on, and reviewing your learning. This approach provides an opportunity for you to “connect the dots” and observe the relationships between and among activities, interactions, and outcomes.

Unlike a personal journal of thoughts and feelings, this leadership journal is a record of your activities, assessments, and learning related to this academic experience.

Journal entries should include a record of the number of hours spent with your nurse leader each week.

Write a journal entry of 750-1,500 words on the subject of provision, including the following:

Practicum Activities Reflection: Provide observations and thoughts on the activities in your practicum during Weeks 8 & 9. (Con’t to observe senior nurse leader in their activities, weekly meetings with nurse mentor matched pair)

Application of Leadership: Describe how your nurse leader/preceptor uses quality improvement indicators in their leadership role. How does this impact patient outcomes? What impact does this have on the organization?

Practicum Project Preparation: Describe any potential and/or actual barriers you have encountered as you prepared for project implementation. If you have not encountered any, what could present a barrier in the future? How do you plan to approach and overcome or handle these barriers? (Barrier– time for the matched pair to meet up and this past week, mentor was out ill with covid and mentee had to talk over phone)

Leadership Video Reflection: Reflect on at least two things you learned from the “Servant Leadership – Issue of Headship” video.

This paper will reflect on these activities of weeks 8 and 9. It explains how nurses apply quality improvement indicators in their leadership capacities. It also shows how QI indicators are related to patients’ outcomes and organizational performance. The document shows the most likely difficulties that may be encountered when implementing the project. Finally, it considers what is learned from servant leadership.

Practicum Activities Reflection

In week 8, I focused on the communication strategies employed when dealing with contentious communications. It explains the importance of communication in managing a diverse human resource. As a result, Week 8 showed a time in my working experience when leaders applied appropriate communication strategies. Interpersonal communication skills in healthcare scenarios are essential for understanding the needs of the patients and for handling a variety of people. Nurse leaders in the intensive-care unit focused on the teach-back technique to enhance communication with patients and the healthcare teams (Hafsteinsdóttir et al., 2020). From the course, I learned about the importance of mentoring in leadership during week 9. Week 9 discussed the historical leadership behavior of a mentor and emphasized the necessity of constructive interaction between the mentor, the mentee, and the leaders. Leadership coaching is essential to build rapport and confidence in various teams of employees. My mentor applied democratic leadership that constantly encouraged the team and boosted morale and performance (Wati et al., 2019).

Application of Leadership

In the leadership capacity, my preceptor uses quality improvement indicators by introducing new policies and procedures that help the unit team achieve and maintain their quality improvement goals (Wati et al., 2019). The nurse leader/preceptor focuses on helping the unit personnel prevent patient injury and supports the idea of nurses as the main line of defense against such possibilities (Siregar et al., 2021). Nurse leaders incorporate knowledge and interpersonal processes to foster staff and improve patient care. The identified leadership competencies for effective nursing preceptorship include interpersonal relationship management, conflict management, and recognition of others’ efforts. Quality improvement indicators employed by nurse leaders enable the evaluation of the system’s current performance, the promotion of knowledge exchange, and the increase in accountability. The quality improvement indicators for PIV infiltration and documentation helped the nurse leaders and preceptors control the variation and bring expected results to improve the patient’s health status (Zendrato et al., 2019).

Practicum Project Preparation

However, with access to a plethora of resources, training materials, and flexible healthcare approaches, healthcare organizations are still losing significant amounts of money annually while struggling with the issues of implementing the PIV infiltration and documentation project (Hafsteinsdóttir et al., 2020). The main issue noted about the practice of PIV penetration and documentation reported by preceptors is a lack of communication. Stakeholder involvement must, therefore, be informed by effective modes of communication that nurse leaders ought to practice for the project’s success. According to Siregar et al., 2021, communication is reported to be a significant issue in project management by 32% of healthcare workers. Nurse leaders may recommend the application of different collaboration and project management software applications to update patients, staff, and doctors. In my view, project collaboration technologies help nurse leaders perform their tasks and foster team transparency and accountability. Time and resources are significant challenges to implementing the PIV infiltration and documentation exercise. Skilled cost management by the healthcare manager or the nurse leader may reduce problems in project delivery and enhance the speed at which results are achieved (Zendrato et al., 2019). However, the nurse leaders’ or team members’ low competencies may hamper the project’s implementation. Thus, the abilities and skills required for the nurse leaders to implement the project should be defined in advance.

Leadership Video Reflection

The movie showed that servant leadership focuses on the needs of the followers, ensuring they participate in decision-making processes and ensuring their growth. The film shows that God assigned different roles to men and women. Servant leadership refers to always guiding the best interest of people and families (Savala, 2021). The film depicted that a home servant leader must perform several balancing acts. According to the Bible, young men must learn how to make the family agree. The movie shows that servant leadership is achieved together by acknowledging that the husband is a co-decision maker with the wife in determining home construction (Khuwaja et al., 2020). As a spouse, a servant leader listens to family members more and, as a result, provides them with more support and encouragement to lead meaningful lives.

Conclusion

Consequently, influential nurse leaders apply and promote knowledge and interpersonal relationships in staff motivation and improvement of patient care. The quality improvement indicators that included infiltration and documentation of PIV helped the nurse supervisors and preceptors to reduce variation and achieve better results to improve the patient’s health status. The first challenge preceptors experienced in using PIV penetration and documentation is a lack of communication. To ensure that stakeholders are included in the plan and carry out their plan effectively, nurse leaders should conform to good communication practices such as proper and frequent communication.Practicum Journal: Headship – Leadership Journal Template
