This is the first assignment where you are starting to write your project paper. Here are some hints towards a successful background, significance, purpose and PICO question.
Background and Significance
This is the beginning of the paper when the author (you) have to sell the problem to the reader (faculty). A nice strategy is to begin with some statistics that demonstrate the seriousness of the problem. This grabs the reader’s attention right from the start. Then go into some definitions of clinical terms.
Describe the clinical nature of the problem, Including physiology and pathophysiology. Remember, you are clinical experts and here is where that can be displayed.
Purpose
Address current practice and what is the gap between current practice and best evidence. Be concise in your purpose statement. Imagine riding in the elevator and you are asked to explain your project.
PICO
What is the population, intervention, comparison, and outcome? Who is your population of focus? What is the intervention? The comparison is best evidence to current practice, for example. What is the outcome?
GENERAL CLASS INSTRUCTIONS
Please refer to the DNP Project Templates in this Module. Here is the link to the DNP paper template DNP Paper Template 1.24[3]-2-1.docx
Your proposal must be written using APA format. The template has been prepared with basic APA formatting. Please pay particular attention to headers, spacing, in-text citation format, and reference list citations. Refer to you APA Manual (7th edition) and/or the Purdue OWL (Online Writing Lab) resource for details. https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/general_format.htmlLinks to an external site.
ASSIGNMENT 1 INSTRUCTIONS
Using the DNP Paper Template 1.24[3]-2-2.docx, write a brief introduction to your proposed project. See the template for more information and description of the specific components. Include the following:
Create a Title and complete the Title Page (add running head in the document header)
Write the Background and Significance of the Problem.
Write the Purpose of the Project.
Write the Clinical Question. You may write this as (1) a PICO question or (2) as SMART objectives for your Project: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-oriented (stated timeline for project/outcome)
Project 2: Predictive Analytics for High-Risk No-Show Patients
Project Aim Statement
The aim of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project is to reduce no-show rates in an otolaryngology (ENT) outpatient clinic by implementing a predictive analytics tool to identify patients at high risk for missed appointments and applying targeted reminder strategies. The goal is to improve appointment adherence, optimize provider utilization, and enhance patient access to specialty care.
PICOT Question
P (Population): Adult patients scheduled for outpatient ENT appointments
I (Intervention): Use of a predictive model to identify high-risk no-show patients, followed by enhanced outreach (e.g., phone call + text reminders, flexible rescheduling)
C (Comparison): Standard reminder system (generic automated text or phone reminder)
O (Outcome): Reduction in no-show rates and improvement in appointment adherence
T (Time): Over a 6-month implementation period
PICOT: In adult patients scheduled for outpatient ENT visits (P), how does implementing a predictive analytics tool with enhanced outreach (I) compared to standard reminders (C) affect no-show rates (O) over 6 months (T)?
Project 2: Predictive Analytics for High-Risk No-Show Patients
SMART Goals
Specific & Measurable
By the end of a 6-month pilot, implement a predictive analytics tool in the ENT clinic EMR that identifies at least 80% of high-risk no-show patients based on historical data.
Achievable & Relevant
Within 3 months of implementation, ensure that 90% of flagged high-risk patients receive enhanced outreach (phone call + text reminder).
Outcome-Focused
Reduce overall ENT clinic no-show rates by 15% within 6 months compared to baseline rates before the intervention.
Time-Bound
Conduct outcome evaluation at 3 months and 6 months post-implementation to determine effectiveness of predictive analytics + enhanced outreach.

INTRODUCTION
Introduction/Background Knowledge/Significance
Nature and significance of the national and local problem. Why did you choose this project? Give a general description of the issues and process involved. Give any relavant demographic/data/statistics to describe the scope and severity of the problem
Specific AIMS:
Project Purpose
The purpose of this project is …..(to address your identified systems problem). Why is this important for the clinical site. Define project goals (what are you trying to accomplish? Numerical goals and business impact)
What is the PICOT Question
What is the question that you want answered?
LITERATURE SYNTHESIS
Search Method and Platforms- Use at least three platforms. Use all articles identified for the project (no need to limit manuscripts to certain number)
Comprehensive Appraisal of Evidence (Consider using two-three themes identified in the literature). Provide a summary of literature and relevant information. Identify best practices or evidence based practice
Strengths/Weaknesses/Gaps and Limitations of Evidence
Conclusion- Summarize findings and identified gaps in care
THEORY/FRAMEWORK AND CONCEPTS
Introduce Theory/Framework that will guide the project
Linking Concepts to project purpose, describe selection rationale
METHODS
Quality Improvement Project Design
Approach used for assessing the impact of the intervention. Was this a QI Improvement Project that use the PDSA cycle from the IHI model? Was this a retrospective/prospective examination of a systems change? Remember this is not a Research project but a Quality Improvement project
Setting and Stakeholders
Description of local setting to include an overview of the organization and patient.
Participants and Recruitment
Intervention – Describe the intervention in enough detail that other organziations could reproduce if so desired. What considerations were taken into account to ensure that the implementation matched the plan? (i.e. monitoring and auditing, rapid cycle evaluations?)
Data Collection Measures- What was chosen for studying the process and outcomes and the rationale for choosing them and their validity and reliability
Performance Measure (numerator/denominator)
Type (Process, Outcome, or Structure/Cost)
Data Source (chart review, observation, database – specify)
Frequency of collection (daily, weekly, monthly)
Project Approval if needed (IRB/QIPR/Committee)
Implementation Timeline – Included in project proposal
Data Analysis for Quality Improvement project design
Ethical Considerations- Ethical aspects of conducting the project are addressed. Will there be personal health information collected? If so, how is it protected? If an IRB or QI committee approval is required, include the approval letter in the appendix
RESULTS
Describe Outcomes of Quality Improvement project- Stick to the facts! There is no interpretation of data in this section
Tables and Figures are well designed and support the results
DISCUSSION
Impact of Results on practice – key findings based on the purpose and the question (specific aims). Brief recap of results which expands into the discussion. How does your outcomes compare with the findings in other publications Were there any variables that contributed to the success or failure of the project?
Strengths/Limitations of project-
Conclusions- Plan for dissemination and sustainability
Future Implications and suggested next steps
