The Federalist Papers are a group of essays written by James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay to persuade New Yorkers to adopt the proposed U.S. Constitution in 1787. These essays were published in newspapers throughout the states to win public support for the U.S. Constitution. Today, the U.S. Supreme Court looks to these essays to determine “framers’ intent” as to the meaning of the U.S. Constitution.
